To Celebrate Two Decades of Mining Engineering, the Hasanuddin University School of Engineering Establishes a Partnership with PT Tiran.
The Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University has once again expanded its network of partnerships. This time, the Faculty of Engineering has established a partnership with PT Tiran, a company engaged in nickel mining. This partnership was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two parties. The MoU signing took place during the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Mining Engineering Program at Hasanuddin University on Thursday, April 14, 2024, at the Four Points Hotel in Makassar.
In addition to fulfilling the Tri Dharma of Higher Education and enhancing human resources, the purpose of this MoU is to broaden the experience and career opportunities for graduates of the University of Hasanuddin’s Mining Engineering program. This will be achieved by organizing an internship program for Mining Engineering students at PT Tiran.
This Memorandum of Understanding was signed directly by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Muhammad Isran Ramli, ST., MT., IPM., ASEAN Eng., and the CEO of PT Tiran, Justan R. Siahaan, Ak., MAcc, CA, QIA.
The reason PT Tiran established this partnership with the Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University is its recognition that the mining industry is currently facing a shortage of qualified human resources, particularly in the fields of mechanical engineering and mining; therefore, collaborating with a highly accredited university is seen as a solution for enhancing human resources.
“I realize just how rich Indonesia is in mining resources, yet we still struggle to find the best talent willing to work in the mines,” said Justan.
Prof. Isran explained that the signing of this MoU with PT Tiran is part of the Faculty of Engineering’s ongoing efforts to maintain partnerships with both the government and industry.
According to him, the biggest challenge is how to maximize UNHAS’s mining program’s contribution to the mining sector in Indonesia, particularly in Eastern Indonesia.
One of the leading sectors in the mining industry in Eastern Indonesia is the Tiran Group.
“PT Tiran’s vision and mission align with those of the UNHAS Department of Mining Engineering, so this MoU is expected to yield benefits,” explained Prof. Isran.
From here, Isran continued, we will begin involving students through internships at the company, and faculty members will be able to conduct research more effectively.
“Through this collaboration, the top graduates from the mining faculty can be directly hired, ensuring that the requirement for graduates to secure employment is well met,” he added.
As we know, it is specifically in Eastern Indonesia that we have only recently realized that the country’s greatest mining potential actually lies in this region, and of course, Hasanuddin University will play its part.
