Collaboration Between FT-UH and Kyushu University Grows Stronger in the Field of Environmental Engineering
Makassar, June 11, 2025 – The Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University (FT-UH) hosted an academic visit from a delegation from Kyushu University, Japan, consisting of Prof. Hirofumi Nakayama, Dr. of Eng., Dr. Yasuhiro Sugisaki, and one exchange student from the Department of Urban and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering. The delegation was officially welcomed by Prof. Ir. Muhammad Isran Ramli, M.T., Ph.D., Dean of FT-UH, during a warm reception in the Dean’s Office.
This event was part of a guest lecture series presented by Prof. Nakayama on the topic “History of Waste Management, Legislation, and Policies in Japan.” The guest lecture, organized by the Department of Environmental Engineering, explored how waste management in Japan has evolved through collaboration between government policies, modern technology, and public awareness.
During the meeting, the Dean of FT-UH noted that there is currently a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Faculty of Engineering at Unhas and five engineering-related faculties at Kyushu University, which is now in its third renewal period. This demonstrates the close academic ties between the two institutions and their commitment to continuing long-term collaboration.
Furthermore, it was noted that an MoU at the university level is currently being drafted and will be signed by the Rector of Hasanuddin University and the Rector of Kyushu University. This MoU is expected to open opportunities for broader inter-faculty and interdisciplinary collaboration in the future.
The meeting took place in a cordial and productive atmosphere and was attended by Dr.Eng. Muralia Hustim, Chair of the Department of Environmental Engineering; Dr.Eng. Asiyanti T. Lando, Department Secretary; and Dr.Eng. Irwan Ridwan, Head of the Waste Management Laboratory. All three expressed their appreciation for the visit and explored opportunities for further collaboration, particularly in the areas of research and laboratory work.
On this occasion, the Dean of FT-UH also thanked Prof. Nakayama for his support regarding plans to accept one of the Environmental Engineering Department’s faculty members to pursue doctoral studies (Ph.D.) at his laboratory at Kyushu University. This was viewed as a tangible form of mutually reinforcing cooperation in human resource capacity building.
The Dean of FT-UH concluded the meeting with the hope that this collaboration would not be limited to academic visits and guest lectures, but would evolve into joint research programs, faculty and student exchanges, dual-degree programs, and community service initiatives based on international collaboration.
