Hasanuddin University Faculty of Engineering Strengthens Emergency Preparedness through First Aid Training and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Simulations

Gowa, July 27, 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University (FT Unhas) is strengthening its safety culture and emergency preparedness through a First Aid and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Training Workshop. Held as part of the 2026 New Student Campus Life Orientation Program (PKKMB), the activity went beyond theoretical instruction by equipping participants with practical simulation-based training to respond to emergency situations more quickly and appropriately.

The workshop was held on Monday, July 27, 2026, starting at 9:00 a.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA) until completion. The event took place at the Exhibition Hall, Ground Floor, Center of Technology (CoT) Building, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University, and involved lecturers, education staff, and students as participants. The activity was also supported by the FT Unhas Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Team and the 2026 PKKMB mentors.

For the training, FT Unhas collaborated with medical personnel from Bontomarannu Community Health Center (Puskesmas Bontomarannu), consisting of one physician and three instructors who provided first aid training. This collaboration played an important role in ensuring that first aid procedures were delivered through an approach relevant to the needs of emergency response.

From Knowledge to Readiness to Act

First aid plays an important role in the emergency response chain. In accidents or health emergencies requiring immediate attention, the ability of people at the scene to provide initial assistance can be a critical step before the victim receives further medical treatment.

For this reason, the First Aid and OHS Workshop at FT Unhas was designed to go beyond an understanding of workplace safety. Participants also took part in OHS simulations, enabling them to translate the knowledge they acquired into practical readiness for real-life situations.

This practice-based approach is particularly relevant in an engineering education environment, where academic activities involve various types and levels of risk. Safety education becomes more meaningful when participants not only understand procedures but also know how to respond when confronted with an emergency.

Through the simulations, participants were trained to develop greater awareness of their surroundings, understand the importance of measured and appropriate responses, and improve their readiness to take initial action. The primary outcome expected from the activity is for participants to become better prepared to respond to emergencies, both on campus and in their everyday lives.

Building an OHS Culture as Part of Engineering Education

The involvement of lecturers, education staff, and students demonstrates that safety is not solely the responsibility of a particular group but is a shared responsibility across the entire FT Unhas community.

For students, early exposure to first aid and OHS during their education provides an important foundation for developing a safety-oriented mindset. Meanwhile, for lecturers and education staff, enhancing emergency response competencies can help strengthen a safe learning environment and support the continuity of academic activities.

The activity also demonstrates that engineering education is not solely focused on mastering science and technology but also on applying such knowledge responsibly. Safety is an integral part of professionalism in the engineering field.

The workshop also strengthened collaboration between FT Unhas and Bontomarannu Community Health Center. The involvement of medical professionals as instructors helped bridge academic knowledge with practical experience in healthcare services, allowing first aid training to be delivered in a more contextual and applicable manner.

Strengthening a Safe Campus Ecosystem

For FT Unhas, the First Aid and OHS activities are part of an ongoing effort to build a campus ecosystem that excels not only in education, research, and innovation but also maintains a strong commitment to safety.

Going forward, the knowledge and skills gained through the training are expected to be applied in both academic and non-academic activities. As more members of the academic community develop basic emergency preparedness skills, the campus environment is expected to become more responsive, safer, and more resilient.

Through strengthening first aid competencies and OHS simulations, FT Unhas reaffirms that a safety culture is an essential component in developing professional engineers. Emergency preparedness is not merely an additional skill but a vital competency that contributes to a safe educational environment while shaping graduates who prioritize safety in engineering practice and in serving society.
