Outreach on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)-Based Risk Mitigation: A Collaboration Between the Department of Marine Engineering at the University of Hasanuddin and the Makassar Branch of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII)
Saturday, November 26, 2022—The Department of Marine Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University, in collaboration with the Maritime Division of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) Makassar Branch, held an event titled “Outreach on Occupational Safety and Health-Based Risk Mitigation in the Anging Mamiri Beach Tourism Area in Tanjung Merdeka Village, Tamalate District, Makassar City.” This outreach event was attended by the Chair and members of the Tanjung Merdeka Community Empowerment Board (LPM), representatives of the Tanjung Merdeka Village Administration—including Mr. Abd. Rahman (Head of RW 05) and Mr. J. Dg. Tantu (Head of RT 02)—as well as representatives of community leaders and youth organizations from Tanjung Merdeka Village, and representatives of the Anging Mamiri Beach Tourism Area management. According to Dr. Ir. Taufiqur Rachman, ST., MT., IPM., who served as the coordinator of the awareness-raising event, the lack of early warning signs regarding Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and disaster preparedness in the Anging Mamiri Beach tourist area has resulted in insufficient education for visitors regarding these critical safety measures. It is hoped that this outreach will increase visitors’ awareness and understanding of potential accidents and disasters that could occur at the tourist site, thereby minimizing casualties should a disaster strike. The outreach emphasized the importance of OSH- and disaster-based risk mitigation training, which tourism managers must provide when conducting marine tourism activities. The OSH-based risk mitigation framework in the Anging Mamiri Beach tourist area is people-centered, involving all stakeholders—including tourism business operators, Regional Government Agencies (OPDs), and the local community represented by the Tanjung Merdeka Community Empowerment Agency (TPM), tourists, and the Tamalate Subdistrict Government. This outreach was conducted to raise awareness about the importance of disaster response training and safety risk mitigation for tourists—requirements that must be fulfilled by marine tourism operators in accordance with Law No. 1 of 1970 on Occupational Safety. The outreach also emphasized the importance of coastal buffer zones to protect tourism facilities and local communities’ settlements in the event of a disaster, in accordance with Law No. 11 of 2020 on Job Creation and Ministry of Environment Regulation No. 5 of 2012.
The Chair of the Makassar Branch of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), Dr. Ir. Rustan Tarakka, ST., MT., IPM., highly appreciated this outreach activity and expressed hope that it would provide the greatest possible benefit, particularly for the community surrounding the Anging Mamiri Beach Tourism Area, regarding OSH-based risk mitigation. The outcomes of this activity include a bathymetric map delineating safe swimming areas in the Anging Mamiri Beach Area, as well as signage for mitigating accident risks with potential for disasters specifically in the Marine/Beach Tourism Area.
Furthermore, during this outreach event, safety equipment—specifically life buoys—was also donated to the Anging Mamiri lifeguards.
