The Doctoral Program in Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Hasanuddin, Conferred a New Doctorate Through a Study of Settlement Morphology Models in the Alluvial Region of Samarinda

Gowa, July 25, 2025 — The Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University has once again conferred a doctoral degree to a new graduate from the Doctoral Program in Architecture. Mulyadi (D023201001) successfully defended his dissertation during the Final Examination/Doctoral Graduation Ceremony held at the Unhas Faculty of Engineering campus in Gowa. The results of the examination stated that Mulyadi graduated with the rating “Highly Satisfactory.”

Mulyadi’s dissertation, titled “A Morphological Model of Alluvial Plain Settlements in Sempaja, Samarinda,” explores the spatial and ecological dynamics of settlements in tropical regions that are vulnerable to ecological and social pressures. His research formulated the SME (Ecological Morphogenetic Unit) Spatial Model, which integrates housing typology, elevation, drainage, accessibility, and demographic pressures to support evidence-based and adaptive regional planning in floodplain areas.

The defense was presided over by Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Muhammad Isran Ramli, S.T., M.T., IPM., ASEAN.Eng, who served as Chair of the Committee. Serving as the Supervisor was Prof. Dr. Ir. Triyatni Martosenjoyo, M.Si, accompanied by Co-Supervisors Prof. Dr. Ir. Idawarni Asmal, MT, and Dr. Ir. H. Edward Syarif, S.T., M.T., IAI.

The defense also featured ITS Professor of Architecture, Prof. Dr. Ing. Bambang Soemardiono, as the external examiner, as well as other faculty examiners: Dr. Eng. Ar. Rosady Mulyadi, S.T., M.T., IAI; Dr. Arifuddin Akil, M.T.; Dr. Samsu Arif, M.Si; and Dr. Ir. Ar. Nurul Nadjmi, S.T., M.T., IAI.

This dissertation was recognized for its theoretical and practical contributions to the development of an ecology-based spatial approach to architecture, as well as for offering implications for land-use policy in flood-prone areas. This research underscores the importance of resilient settlement design and an interdisciplinary approach to addressing the challenges of settlement growth in tropical alluvial plains.

With his graduation, Mulyadi officially holds the title of Doctor (Dr.) and further enhances the academic contributions of the Unhas Doctoral Program in Architecture as a center of excellence for the study of Indonesia’s tropical regions.
