UNHAS River School and UI GreenMetric Team Strengthen Campus Lake Conservation Efforts toward a Green Campus
Makassar, May 22, 2026 – Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) has reaffirmed its commitment to building a sustainable campus through a lake clean-up initiative held at the Hasanuddin University Lake on May 22, 2026. The activity involved more than 60 students from the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Hasanuddin University, and was carried out through collaboration between the UNHAS UI GreenMetric Team, the Hasanuddin University Cleaning Service Unit, and the UNHAS River School.
The activity was led by Dr. Eng. Ir. Rita Tahir Lopa, M.T., Head of the Water Division of the UNHAS UI GreenMetric Team. Also attending were Prof. Dr. Eng. Ir. Farouk Maricar, M.T. and Andi Alya Yusriyyah, S.Pi., M.Si., members of the Water Division of the UNHAS UI GreenMetric Team, who provided support for the environmental conservation initiative around the campus lake.
The clean-up focused on removing waste from the lake area and cleaning the surrounding environment. In addition to taking direct action to maintain environmental cleanliness, participants received education on the importance of water resource management, pollution reduction, and aquatic ecosystem conservation as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability across the campus.
The collaboration among students, the UNHAS UI GreenMetric Team, the Cleaning Service Unit, and the UNHAS River School demonstrates the synergy of various elements in supporting environmental conservation programs at Hasanuddin University. Beyond its direct impact on the cleanliness of the lake area, the initiative also served as an educational platform to foster an environmentally conscious culture and encourage the active participation of the academic community in maintaining the quality of the campus environment.
The initiative also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through efforts to protect water quality and prevent pollution of water bodies; SDG 13 (Climate Action) through increased environmental awareness and practical mitigation efforts; SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by reducing waste that could potentially pollute aquatic systems; and SDG 15 (Life on Land) through the conservation of ecosystems and biodiversity around the Hasanuddin University Lake.
The initiative also represents a tangible implementation of the Unhas Berdampak spirit, which seeks to deliver education, research, and community engagement activities that provide direct benefits to the environment and society. The involvement of lecturers, students, education staff, and various units across Hasanuddin University demonstrates that a sustainable campus can only be achieved through collaboration across the entire academic community.
Through this initiative, Hasanuddin University continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability indicators, particularly in the area of water resource management, as promoted by the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. Ongoing environmental conservation initiatives form part of Hasanuddin University's transformation toward a clean, healthy, resilient, and sustainable Green Campus.
It is hoped that similar initiatives can continue to be implemented with the involvement of more members of the academic community and community partners, serving as a tangible contribution by Hasanuddin University to advancing the sustainable development agenda at both the national and global levels.
