Unhas’s Faculty of Engineering Holds a Program to Provide Additional Skills and Certification Exams for Construction Workers Who Are Recent Graduates
Gowa, June 8, 2026 – The Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University, in collaboration with the Makassar Regional Construction Services Office (Balai Jasa Konstruksi Wilayah VI) and the South Sulawesi Provincial Department of Public Works and Construction, organized the Additional Competency Training and Competency Testing/Certification for Construction Workers (TKK) as Vocational Human Resources Experts in the Construction Field for Fiscal Year 2026. The event took place on the 1st floor of the CSA Building at the Unhas Faculty of Engineering and was attended by recent graduates in the field of construction engineering.
This program is part of efforts to improve the quality of Indonesia’s construction workforce through the strengthening of competencies and nationally recognized professional certification. The event featured a number of speakers and stakeholders from the government, the education sector, and the construction industry.
The Director of Construction Workforce Competency and Productivity at the Directorate General of Construction Development, Ministry of Public Works, Ir. Kimron Manil, M.Sc., explained in his presentation the Ministry’s commitment through the “PU 608” program. This program is focused on improving the quality of the construction workforce, alleviating poverty, and promoting inclusive and sustainable national economic growth.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University, represented by the Manager of Human Resources and Alumni, Prof. Ir. Andi Haris Muhammad, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., stated that this certification initiative is a strategic step in preparing graduates who are not only academically excellent but also possess professional competencies recognized by the industry. According to Prof. Andi Haris, professional certification is a vital tool for enhancing graduates’ competitiveness in an increasingly competitive job market. The Unhas Faculty of Engineering remains committed to offering various competency-building programs as a form of support for improving graduate quality while making a tangible contribution to the development of the national construction sector.
The Head of the South Sulawesi Province Department of Public Works and Construction—represented by Dirham Mopilie, S.T.—expressed appreciation for the collaboration between the Makassar Regional Construction Services Office (Balai Jasa Konstruksi Wilayah VI) and the Unhas Faculty of Engineering in organizing training and certification exams for construction workers seeking expert-level qualifications.
In his remarks, he emphasized that the construction sector is one of the main drivers of regional and national development. However, the success of development is not determined solely by the scale of
investment and technological advancements, but also by the quality of the human resources involved.
“These training and certification activities serve as a bridge connecting the academic world with the industrial sector. The competency certificates that participants will receive are not merely administrative documents, but proof of professionalism, a commitment to work quality, workplace safety, and integrity in practicing their profession,” he said. He also urged all participants to make the most of this opportunity by absorbing the experience and knowledge from the experienced instructors and assessors. According to him, professional certification is a vital asset for new graduates entering the workforce and also represents a form of professional responsibility in producing safe, high-quality, and sustainable infrastructure.
On the same occasion, the Head of the Makassar Regional Construction Services Office (Balai Jasa Konstruksi Wilayah VI Makassar), represented by Afandi Andi Basri, S.T., M.T., explained that this event involved 123 participants from two universities. The program included competency refresher sessions through theoretical training, interviews, and presentations, all of which are part of the competency assessment and certification process.
The program was held for three days at Bosowa University and five days at Hasanuddin University. Of the total participants in the program at the Unhas Faculty of Engineering, 50 enrolled in the Junior Construction Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Specialist track, 29 in the Junior Road Engineering Specialist track, and 21 in the Junior Water Resources Engineering Specialist track.
Through this program, the Faculty of Engineering at Hasanuddin University further strengthens its role as an educational institution that not only produces academically qualified graduates but also equips them with professional competencies aligned with industry needs. This certification program is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Unhas Faculty of Engineering graduates at both the national and global levels and support the development of high-quality, sustainable infrastructure in Indonesia.
